Another Electric Vehicle Company Enters the Kenyan Market
Competition is stiffening in the Kenyan EV market as another electric company launched on October 30, 2024. The entry of MojaEV in a ceremony presided over by Environment, Climate Change and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale cements Kenya as the foremost EV innovation centre in Eastern Africa and Africa.
MojaEV, an new energy markting company, launched its first 100 fully electric vehicles at the company’s offices at Sameer Business Park, Nairobi. The company is using two brands Skyworth K and NETA V for its flagship venture into the personal vehicle e-mobility industry, with plans to introduce a third brand dubbed Boma.
The three Chinese car brands cater to various customer needs and budgets.
The Neta V August 2023 Model comes with a battery capacity of 38.5 kWh, providing a range of approximately 380 kilometers on a full charge under standard driving conditions (according to the company).
Kenya has been at the forefront of reducing carbon emissions in the world, a fact emphasized by the CS during the launch. Nairobi hosted the inaugural Africa Climate Summit in 2023.
The Cabinet Secretary acknowledged the need for the private sector to recognise that Kenya’s green transition relies on their collective efforts and gave assurance of government support for sustainable practices.
Accodring to data shared by Duale, the transport sector consumes approximately 80% of the petroleum products imported into the country.
The sector is also responsible for about 10% of national greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
This figure may rise to 17% by 2030 due to population growth, industrialization and other factors if decisive actions are not taken.
With its 100 vehicle fleet, MojaEV joins the ranks of major players such as pioneering EV startups BasiGo and Roam in accelerating the adoption of electric transportation on Kenya.
