MPESA Global – How the Money Transfer Service Works

MPESA Global pay is a mobile money transfer service by Safaricom. It enables one to send or receive money in Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania from the rest of the world.

According to Safaricom, you can use MPESA Global to send money to over 500,000 Western Union locations as well as millions of accounts in Germany, China and UAE. The only limitation is that you cannot send more than KES 70,000 at a go, perhaps to limit fraud and money laundering.

How to use MPESA Global Pay

It is easy to register using MPESA Global USSD code *840# or through the MySafaricom App. The company does not register you automatically to the global payments service. You must own a Safaricom SIM card and be an MPESA user to be eligible for the service.

To register:

  1. Dial MPESA Global code *840#
  2. Enter your physical address or street
  3. Accept the terms and conditions for the service.
  4. Select Send money abroad

Alternatively, you can use the MySafaricom App

  1. Select MPESA
  2. Select MPESA Global
  3. Accept terms and conditions to opt in

Once opt in, you can send money to MPESA recipients from wherever you are. You are able to send KES 101 – 70,000 in a single transaction. Once you register, you can now send money using the following steps:

Via USSD Procedure

  1. Dial *840#
  2. Select Western Union Location
  3. Select New Recipient
  4. Enter First name
  5. Enter Last name
  6. Enter Middle name
  7. Enter Amount
  8. Pick Destination
  9. Enter 2 letter Country ISO(Where user selects ‘Other’)
  10. Enter Purpose of funds
  11. Enter source of funds
  12. Confirm transaction details and charges
  13. Enter M-PESA PIN

You will receive an M-PESA SMS and another SMS with the MTCN from M-PESA Global. Share this MTCN with the person you are sending the money because they will need it to withdraw.

To receive money via MPESA Global pay, you must be a registered MPESA user. However, it is not a must for you to have enabled the global payments service to receive funds.

When in Tanzania, just dial *150*00# and then select “Send money to MPESA Kenya” on your Vodacom line.

From Uganda, just dial *165# and Send money to Kenya from your MTN line.
