Shadrack Machanje has overcome numerous hurdles to finally clinch the Umoja 2 MCA seat. He was elected on the ODM under the Azimio la Umoja coalition party banner.

It was the fourth time that the politician and community organiser was giving a stab at the position. His was a bitter sweet victory after overcoming 14 cases challenging his candidature.

The Court of Appeal dismissed the charges laid against Shadrack and the ODM party by losing incumbent Joseph Ndonji.

Ndonji had filed petitions and counter petitions at the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal in a bid to snatch the ODM ticket despite finishing 6th in the nominations. He received favourable decisions in what many considered ‘dubious’ circumstances.

The Embakasi West Returning Officer announced Shadrack Machanje as the winner of the hotly contested election by a huge margin. He garnered 12,829 votes. UDA Party’s Felicien Obilo came a distant second with 5,457 votes.

During the tense announcements, the Returning Officer had to pause the proceedings deep in the night after thugs linked to the losing side tried to disrupt the certificate signing event. Police posted at he Busara Primary School tallying centre however brought the situation under control after whipping the armed youths out of the station.

The larger Embakasi is a traditional electoral hotspot. A Returning Officer in the neighbouring Embakasi East has been reported missing by the IEBC.
